7 Indie Beauty Must-Haves for Going Back to Work or School After Summer Vacation

By Stephanie Jade Wong

Summer vacation is over?! Join us in a collective sigh. Whenever September rolls around, the feeling in the air seems to change from carefree to focused. Fall is right around the corner, and whether you’re headed back to school or back to work, we’ve got the indie beauty picks you’ll want to add to your makeup bag.

1. Bawdy Beauty Butt Masks ($9-36)

Sheet masks have become popular over the years, and are now pretty common. I’ve tried my fair share of lip masks, hand masks, and foot masks, but I was curious to hear about butt masks. (Yes, you read that correctly.)

Don’t be bummed if you’ve already stored your swimsuit away in the back of your closet. You can still use a butt mask even if you won’t be baring parts of your tush! You sit on your rear-end all day at school or work, so why not give it some TLC with a butt mask?

We’ve got four different types of butt masks for you to choose from depending on what benefits you’re looking for in the mask. The benefits range from firming, detoxifying, brightening, and more. If you can’t choose just one, you can buy a set of all four (also known as the Galaxy Kit).

Bawdy is a brand all about high-quality ingredients and clean beauty. All of its products are plant-based, cruelty-free, and non-toxic. Sylwia Wiesenberg, Bawdy’s founder, a gymnast and athlete, has always been in awe of butts. She believes that butt beauty is about confidence, and loving yourself from top to bottom.

If butt masks are a little too out there for you, they make for a cheeky gift to a friend. Shop butt masks here.

2. Elate Uplift Foundation ($4-32)

Don’t have much time on your hands, but want that flawless skin look? Or maybe you just want to appear more awake early in the morning. Either way, try Elate Uplift Foundation

Elate’s Uplift Foundation is perfect for when you’ve only got five minutes to get ready in the morning. The whipped creme texture feels light on your face, so you’ll feel comfortable in it all day.

The foundation is buildable, which means you can layer it to create a shade you prefer. The formula can provide light to medium coverage depending on how you apply it. You can use a brush for light coverage, or your fingertips for medium coverage. Adding more layers of the foundation can create a more opaque look.

We feature it in six different shades:

  • UN1: Cool undertones for very light skin tones.
  • UN2: Neutral undertones for light skin tones.
  • UN3: Neutral undertones for medium skin tones.
  • UW4: Warm undertones for medium skin tones.
  • UW6: Warm undertones for medium to deep skin tones.
  • UW8 (pictured above): Cool undertones for deep skin tones.

A couple of our favorite ingredients in this foundation include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, AKA: mineral sunscreen. (Although that doesn’t mean you can get away with not wearing sunscreen over or under this foundation! Elate foundations aren’t rated for SPF and should be used with another form of sunscreen.)

We also love that there’s jojoba, coconut, and argan oil in the Uplift Foundation so that it’ll keep your face moisturized throughout the day. Shop Elate here.

3. Able No Mess’Cara ($29)

How many times do you accidentally get mascara on your eyelid? Even worse: How many times have you gotten mascara on your eyelid and ruined an eyeshadow look?

With Able’s No Mess’Cara, you’ll be able to swiftly swipe on mascara without worrying about cleaning up a mess or re-doing your eyeshadow.

Does it sound too good to be true? It’s not! You can use the product in three simple steps.

Here’s how it works:

  • Step 1: Remove the mascara wand from the tube.
  • Step 2: Place the shield located at the bottom of the mascara tube over your eyelid to shield it from mascara.
  • Step 3: Apply mascara as usual.

If you get mascara on your shield, you simply wipe it off or wash it off, and it’s good as new.

This product is great for when you’re in a hurry, or if you’re super messy with your mascara application. (Guilty as charged! 🙋🏻‍♀️) Shop No Mess’Cara here.

4. Au Naturale Anywhere Creme Multi-Stick ($35)

If you’re anything like me, you’re not a fan of bringing a bulky makeup bag with you when you’re on-the-go. I limit the number of products I bring with me when I leave home because who wants to lug around a full vanity? Absolutely no one. If you feel the same way as me, you’ll most likely enjoy traveling around with multi-sticks.

The Au Naturale Anywhere Creme Multi-Sticks come in two different shades:

  • Grapefruit (pictured above): a neutral, gold pink
  • Sweetheart (pictured below): a soft, nude mauve

You can use these multi-sticks on your eyelids, cheekbones, and lips. It’s great if you’re trying to find a natural makeup look. Not feeling the monochromatic look? Get a multi-stick in each shade to mix and match your look!

You can apply this product from the stick directly to your skin, use your fingertips, or a brush. If you don’t have time for makeup at home, or if you’re running late, you can always apply your multi-stick while you’re on-the-go or when you get to your destination.

You can do your makeup in a couple minutes with a multi-stick, which makes it a great pick for a last-minute outing or when you need to brighten up dull skin.

The formula is 100% natural, cruelty-free, vegan, and made in the USA.

Au Naturale was founded by Ashley Prange. She left her job as a nuclear analyst so she could focus on creating a line of long-lasting color cosmetics that didn’t give her breakouts, irritate her skin, or have any harmful chemicals in them. Shop Au Naturale here.

Were you wearing neon all summer? An easy way to bring your brights into fall is with red lipstick.

Matte red lips will be a hot trend this fall and winter, which makes Muskaan’s Hydra-Matte Lipstick in Cerise Nights the perfect pick to add to your collection.

Whether or not you take fashion week’s trends into your beauty routine, a red lip is a classic look. You can work a whole outfit around a red lip, and it looks great on young adults and the young at heart.

We love this lipstick because it’s long-lasting, matte, and it’s hydrating — everything we want in a great lip product! It’s also:

  • Certified vegan
  • Cruelty-free
  • Gluten-free
  • Halal
  • 70% Organic
  • 25% Natural

Muskaan, the Urdu word for “smile,” was founded by Sabeen Zia. This lipstick is part of her debut collection, “Cozy on the Lips.” If you’re not into red, but still want a new lipstick, we feature three other shades from this brand on our Love, Indie B. Shop Muskaan here.

The buildable product goes on matte, and is made with natural mineral pigments that add depth and warmth to your skin.

The formula is packaged as a pressed powder in a refillable aluminum pan which will fit into the Clove + Hallow compact or any other magnetic palettes.

The bronzer is 100% PETA-certified cruelty-free and vegan. A company can be considered 100% PETA-certified cruelty-free by either signing PETA’s statement of assurance or providing a statement that verfies they don’t conduct or comission animal testing for their ingredients or products. Shop Clove + Hallow here.

7. Coco Ensoleille Makeup Assassin ($35)

Fall is about turning over a new leaf, so if you go to bed with your makeup on, I want to introduce you to Coco Ensoleille Makeup Assassin.

With a squeeze of this rose-scented cleansing balm, you’ll be able to both wash your face and remove your makeup all in one go. We love a good two-in-one product at the end of a long day.

If you absolutely hate removing your makeup before bed, change the mindset you’ve got about it and think of it in a different light.

Step 1: Massage the oil-based balm into your face to melt your makeup away. The thick balm will become more of a liquid as you keep massaging. (Warning: This can turn into a melty makeup mess, so it’s best to do this above your sink.)

Step 2: Close your eyes and relax while you give your face a massage.

Step 3: Rinse away your makeup and the dirt and grime from the day, then pat your face dry and marvel at your clean, makeup-free skin.

Gone are the days where you wake up with all your makeup on your pillow. This cleansing balm is vegan, cruelty-free, and works well for oily and combo skin.
