Muskaan Makeup's founder, Sabeen Zia, is a cosmetic chemist who's worked at companies like L'Oreal, Colorescience & Blowpro. Throughout her career, she has worked on formulations, product development, and marketing; which has given her amazing perspective on the industry and inspired her debut collection, Cozy On The Lips, a small line of nourishing, hydrating and long-lasting lipsticks in four universally flattering shades.
Sabeen has imbued the brand with inspiration from her life, Muskaan translates to Smile in Urdu, and the name for each color was inspired by memories created with friends and family (but totally relatable to anyone). For example, bougie brunch (violet), we've all had one or two or too many to count! The others, Weekend Escapades (fuschia), Burkini Beach Day (nude), & Cerise Nights (red), are equally relatable and, for me, evoke fond memories of my time living in NYC - weekend explorations of the many neighborhoods & boroughs, pool parties in New Jersey and the occasional night out that ended with a view of the sun rising over Manhattan. *Sigh*
Another reason to love The Cozy On The Lips collection? It’s designed to nourish with its antioxidant and vitamin-packed formula, all while creating a cozy, non-drying matte effect on the lip. The formula is composed of organic butter and oils, and other natural ingredients! It is approximately 70% organic and 25% natural. The products are certified Vegan, Halal, cruelty-free & gluten-free (Ecocert pending). Having these certifications was a step Sabeen felt was necessary to make sure consumer were confident that the formula met their standards.
You may be wondering, why Halal? According to Zia, "this certification ensures that your product was inspected not only for the ingredients used in production but also for cross-contamination of such materials during preparation, processing, manufacturing, and storage of the products. It also confirms the products are free of animal-derived substances of non-Halal origin, GMOs, and alcohol".
One of Sabeen's desires when founding Muskaan was to give back. So, she created "Mission Muskaan", which donates a portion their profits to charity. Consumers purchasing via their website can choose between a national or local Philadelphia based charity, which will change every 3-6 months. Currently, the charities are Heroic Hearts and Philly Paws. Love, Indie B.'s contribution went to Heroic Hearts!
What’s in store for Muskaan? Sabeen plans to launch six shades with a focus on women empowerment in early 2019, followed by many more products, and eventually skincare.
